Burton on Trent

John (1798-1877)

John was born in Branston(e), Burton on Trent , which is close to Barton under Needwood where he married Lydia Storer, and they raised their family. They lived at Blakenhall Gate on the edge of the Forest of Needwood, although there would be little sign of the forest as it was cleared after enclosure.   "On the edge of the village is the area known as Barton Gate that is where the gate to the forest would have been. People living in that area as late as the early 20th Century still referred to themselves as living "on the forest" though there is no sign of a forest anymore."  (Under the Needwood Tree: A glimpse into the history of Barton, Steve Gardner, Barton Under Needwood Parish Council 1995, p 32).

There were only a few other Astles living in Barton in 1841, one small family and three female servants in various houses in the village. On the 1851 census John and Lydia with sons Edwin and John are living at Blakenhall Gate. On the 1861 census John Lydia and Edwin are still at Blakenhall Gate. On the 1871 census John and Lydia are still at Blakenhall Gate, and Edwin and Harriet are at Sitch Lane Barton with their young family.

John and Lydia were married at St James Church, Barton Under Needwood on 3rd October 1825. John was the son of John Astle and Ann Wood, Lydia was the daughter of Elizabeth Storer.
